The St Barbara’s Day Luncheon is the final event of the year and celebrates the Feast of St Barbara – the Patron Saint of Miners.

Traditionally held on the first Friday of December, WA Mining Club members and their guests take the opportunity to pause and appreciate the people dedicated to the mining industry, and celebrate the rich endowment of mineral wealth that underpins much of our economy and provides hope for the future. It is a time for fellowship and fraternity, and to remember those who have been lost in our industry throughout the past year.

Our guest speakers take the opportunity to share their personal journey of their career in the resources industry – particularly the highs and lows, and generally provide a story of inspiration to our audience.

St Barbara’s Day is one of the Club’s biggest events, often attracting 500+ guests and is always attended by leaders of industry, government and media.

Born in Kalgoorlie, Ron Sayers love for drilling saw him start Ausdrill in 1987, which he would lead for over 30 years. During this time, the company would grow from a handful of people, to nearly 5,000. It would also see Ausdrill expand from Australia into Africa, where much of its business is today. After nearly 30 years driving the company, Ron retired in 2018 and now runs his farm, Yarradale Stud, which runs a few hundred horses.

Join us to find out about how the famous potato peeler story unfolded, hear about how Ron started his business empire with a handshake along with many other often hilarious stories that make up Ron’s colourful life.
