For those of us old enough to remember, the title for this month’s WA Mining Club luncheon takes inspiration from Norman May’s legendary commentary at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, in the final stages of the mens 4 x 100m swimming medley relay as Neil Brooks anchored the final leg to touch out the home nation by a short half arm. For those too young to have memories of this iconic moment in Australian Sport, do yourself a favour and jump online for a squizzy.
So what does this have to do with our panel of gold industry execs, consisting of Paul Cmrlec (MD Pantoro Gold), Luke Creagh (CEO Ora Banda Mining) and Rob Ryan (CEO Mineral Mining Services) – nothing at all really, just a snappy title. In fact, it’d be relatively safe to assume that (whilst they all clearly in peak physical condition) none of our panel are likely to have competed at the Olympics before, because they’ve been too darned busy building some of Australia’s best gold mining companies ! End of tenuous Olympic references …….
Each of the mining operations represented by the panellists has had a very different pathway to production. Pantoro acquired the Norseman Gold Project out of care and maintenance and refurbished the processing plant using contractors and flipped the traditional underground Norseman operations into predominantly open pit operations, Mineral Mining Services runs a hybrid contractor / owner operator model a evidenced by their east Sampson Dam mining operation in a toll treatment agreement with Norton Goldfields and a gold mining JV with Black Cat Syndicate in addition to their mine contracting operations. Ora Banda had a hiaitus and reset under new management, with a philosophy of building the higher grade resource prior to recommencing operations. This promises to be a fascinating discussion, as MC Tim McMillan guides the panel through these project generation differences as well as a host of others issue such as approval timelines and challenges, recent gold prices records and the effect on mined grade and unit operating costs, the rapid decline around Australia of the Fraser Institute rankings, corporate acquisition activity, future gold price drivers and other witticisms and industry trend observations from our esteemed panel’s wealth of industry experience.
So where else would you rather be on Thursday 25th September ? Get yourself down to Optus for 11.30am and get settled in for a doozy of a discussion. Dont leave it until the last minute and regret when you forget – jump on it straight away to secure a seat !
Following the September lunch, we finish our luncheon calendar for 2025 with a pair of Dales. Dale Henderson (MD and CEO Pilbara Minerals) is our October speaker followed by our St Barbara’s Day speaker Dale Elphinstone.
We’re very proud to have showcased some great speakers from a diverse array of companies this year, capped off nicely with a gold panel in a record gold price environment, Dale H speaking on lithium just as the lithium price appears to be showing positive signs and then industry legend and all-round nice guy Dale Elphinstone rounding out the year in style !
See you all on the 25th September.
