Right out of left field comes a fascinating tale of the modern-day construction of a multi-generational solar evaporation operation producing both salt and sulphate of potash about 100 clicks south of Karratha. With some serious financial backing and a board chock full of experience, power, talent and a truckload of derring-do, the Mardie Project is hurtling towards production.

So many questions …. like ….

What on earth is a solar evaporation operation and how does it work ?

What are the uses and markets for the salt (are there really that many fish and chip shops in the world ?) and the sulphate of potash ?

How do you get fertiliser from seawater ?

How long until first production ? Full production ?

What innovation has been adopted and what technical challenges have been overcome ?

What was the approvals process like and could it have been made simpler with no adverse effects on safety or the environment ?

How does the port work and what’s an OGV and a TSV ?

And why has nobody done this before (at least the fertiliser part anyway) ?

We don’t often encourage our speakers to wax lyrical about their projects, preferring instead to seek broader insights into the industry in general, but in this unique case I’m sure we can all agree that an exception is called for to allow Mr Boshoff to set us straight on the above questions and more …..
