Africa Downunder hits the Pan Pacific Hotel in Perth from 2-4th September for its 24th year.  This conference, hosted by Paydirt Media has grown to become the largest African focused event held outside the African continent and is proudly supported by AAMEG (Australia-Africa Minerals and Energy Group),

Our local media tends to focus on the negatives, with predominantly sensationalist news flow coming out of Africa – because good news never made a paper sell (quoting John Williamson from ‘Cootamundra Wattle’). Operational risks tend to present as either acute one-off risks or chronic ongoing challenges. We semi-regularly hear of military coups, kidnappings and extortions, nationalising of resources, law changes and ownership challenges, but what is the balanced truth when it comes to operating in Africa ? Bear in mind also that operating in Australia has become gradually but chronically (and sometimes acutely) more difficult over recent decades. Examples include government funded environmental lawfare advocates like the EDO (“Environmental Defender’s Office”) running spurious campaigns, project interventions such as that seen with Regis Resources’ McPhillamy’s gold project in NSW, increasingly complex approvals bureaucracy, unnecessarily stringent licensing conditions and less favourable taxation regimes for exploration companies – rolling into a gradual deterioration across most Australian states in the Fraser Institute rankings. So, if you’re involved in the resources industry in Australia as either a mine owner or supplier / contractor, it may pay to keep a weather eye on developments in Africa to stay abreast of developments and better understand the relative risks of operating on the African continent. Which, fortunately for the audience, is precisely what the panel will be charged with discussing. Your panel is characterised by a wealth of experience across Australia and Africa, from mine ownership, to mine development and contract service provision, and facilitated by one of the most experienced legal practitioners in Africa.
