2025 1st May Luncheon LIVESTREAM – “New Clear Days”

Event - 2025 1st May Luncheon LIVESTREAM – “New Clear Days”

THIS IS A LIVESTREAMED VERSION OF THIS EVENT

New Clear Days is also the title of an album by British rock group the Vapours from 1980, spawning the hit single ‘Turning Japanese’. Interesting that such a title was used four and a half decades ago in the UK, hinting that the nuclear debate is likely to be somewhat more advanced there than here in Australia.  Interesting also that the British (Labour) government, like so many others around the world, is ‘all in’ on nuclear power generation owing to its unparalleled ability to generate an abundance of safe, clean, emissions free base load power. Whilst there is an argument to say we have a tad more sun here than in the UK, supporting the merits of harnessing solar power, we haven’t figured a way yet to be rid of that pesky night time….. The nuclear debate in the UK could not be more diametrically opposed to the situation in Australia, where our leaders behave like ostriches with their heads buried in the sand, hiding behind the current bans on all things nuclear to avoid a proper, scientific, non-ideological good old-fashioned debate on the merits of nuclear power.

Well, we here at the WA Mining Club, (whilst not politically aligned) love a good old truth-telling session to keep the debate bubbling along in the background. We’ve supported businesses involved in mining the raw materials needed for the renewables sector and we acknowledge the importance of considering all forms of power generation, from wind and solar firmed by batteries, to fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) and hydro power. We’d hate to see nuclear left out of the discussion, so that’s precisely why we’ve pulled together an incredible panel of nuclear experts to discuss how the future could look in Australia with nuclear power generation and uranium mining. Our panelists include Jaz Diab (Partner / MD at GNSP – Global Nuclear Security Partners), Nicholas Crowther (Principal Advisor – Nuclear Energy at Minerals Council of Australia) and last but certainly not least James Fleay (Project Development Manager – Public Infrastructure, Bechtel Australia and former Senior Policy Advisor to Ted O’Brien – Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy). Our moderator will guide our panel through what will undoubtedly be a fascinating discussion, ranging from how to remove the current bans on uranium mining, the existing nuclear expertise in Australia, facts around the actual costs of designing and constructing nuclear plants based upon global examples, problems with existing costing models, to the challenges and opportunities around the storage of nuclear waste.

You can be sure that all attendees will leave the room much wiser on these matters and be able to contribute sensibly and articulately to water cooler and BBQ debates on the subject. I say it pretty well every month, but you really don’t want to miss this one! Get in quick so you don’t get tangled up with Easter and Anzac Day and forget to book in time.
