Highlights from the WA Mining Club’s August Luncheon

A large and enthusiastic crowd gathered at Optus Stadium for the WA Mining Club’s August Luncheon, eager to hear from Stuart Tonkin, Managing Director of Northern Star Resources, the ASX’s largest listed gold producer. Hailing from Lesmurdie, Tonkin shared insights into how Northern Star has achieved such remarkable growth and success, far outpacing other companies with similar opportunities.

Attendees quickly learned that Northern Star’s success is rooted in strong, consistent leadership and a solid company culture. These key attributes, coupled with sound business principles and a boost from favorable commodity prices, have helped shape Northern Star into the industry leader it is today. Tonkin emphasised that the company’s future success is baked into what he described as their “3M’s operating recipe.”

The audience was also treated to some of Tonkin’s unique perspectives, or “Tonkinisms,” as he spoke at length about Northern Star’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. He suggested that society might be better served if all schools were co-ed, promoting gender integration and mutual respect during the crucial formative years. This, he argued, could help create healthier gender interactions from an early age.

The August luncheon marked the WA Mining Club’s largest event outside its signature St Barbara’s Day celebrations, with more than 620 attendees enjoying the vibrant networking atmosphere. Regular MC Tim McMillan expertly guided the event, adding to the day’s success.

Looking ahead, September is shaping up to be another unmissable event as Regis Resources MD and CEO Jim Beyer takes the stage for an engaging conversation with Babs McHugh. With recent developments in New South Wales, where federal decisions have stalled local approvals for Regis Resources’ McPhillamy’s gold mine, this discussion on Thursday, September 26th is bound to be both timely and insightful.
