The West Australian Mining Club was formed in Perth in 1972 by industry professionals who felt there was a need for regular interaction at a social and technical level for a wider cross section of industry personnel than was catered for by the then existing societies.
The current membership includes representatives from all facets of the mining and associated industries including geologists, engineers, metallurgists, accountants, economists, lawyers, journalists, technical representatives, drilling company representatives, suppliers and others.
The Club holds regular monthly luncheon meetings, generally on the last Thursday of the month, during which members can mix socially and listen to guest speakers talk on topics of interest to the industry. An annual dinner is also held at which a prominent person in either the mining industry or politics speaks on important issues in the industry. An annual Golf Day for the mining industry and its associated service provision industries is also
held. The major aim of the Club is to assist in the advancement of the mining industry, particularly in Western Australia;
- by promoting and encouraging the dissemination of information among people employed by the industry, and;
- by arranging for technical discussion groups and lectures involving experts in the various fields of mineral and oil exploration, extraction, processing and marketing.
The WA Mining Club has launched a major education initiative with its decision to offer a single university scholarship each year to a student from the discipline engineering ie mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, etc, geology, metallurgy and mining engineering faculties of the University of Western Australia, Curtin University of Technology, Murdoch University and the West Australian School of Mines.
